Biography

Dr. Peter G Gerbino, MD

Dr. Gerbino has practiced orthopedic sports medicine since finishing residency in 1992. Most of his time has been spent with patients and students in the office, in the operating room and on the hospital wards. Dr. Gerbino brings a strong clinical, academic and research background; skilled surgical expertise and a respected international reputation to Monterey.

Born in Boston, Dr. Gerbino earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from Stanford University. He graduated from medical school at the University of Pittsburgh in 1986. Upon receiving his M.D., he moved back to the San Francisco Bay area for a surgical intern position at the Naval Hospital in Oakland. Returning east, he was a Resident in Orthopedic Surgery at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia for four years.

Dr. Gerbino completed a one year Sports Medicine Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. He also served as Boston-Stockholm Sports Medicine Exchange Fellow and as a Clinical Orthopedic Society Traveling Fellow.

Dr. Gerbino’s academic appointments have included Orthopedic Surgery positions at the Naval Hospital in Long Beach, California, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio and at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery and Subspecialty Board Certified in Sports Medicine.

Through his professional positions, Dr. Gerbino has worked first-hand with top athletes in multiple sports. He has served as a medical team member for the Boston, Pittsburgh and Big Sur Marathons and as an orthopedic consultant for University of Cincinnati and Miami University of Ohio Intercollegiate Athletics. He has also provided medical care for the Boston Ballet and U.S. Figure Skating team. He was the Team Physician for Babson College in Massachusetts for six years. Currently, Dr Gerbino is Team Physician for Seaside High School, United States Figure Skating and for the Monterey Bay Roller Derby league. He was selected and worked as the doctor for US Figure Skating for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. He is the Team Physician for the Monterey Bay Football Club, our professional soccer team.

Dr. Gerbino has continuously taught residents and fellows while lecturing locally, nationally and internationally. He has built a global reputation as a sports medicine expert by lecturing around the world. He also served for 34 years with the U.S. Navy and was on active duty during the Gulf War and again during the Iraq War.

He has concentrated on achieving clinical excellence in orthopedic surgery, teaching orthopedics and conducting research in sports medicine. A large portion of his patients suffer from anterior knee pain. He has focused much of his research and practice efforts on treating this condition. He highly values giving patients with knee pain a precise diagnosis that includes all the components of their particular injury.

Dr. Gerbino’s clinical contributions include introducing a new method of repairing loose posterior cruciate ligaments. At the head of his field, he has developed a new technique for reconstructing the medial patellofemoral ligament of the knee. His research has led to an improved method of diagnosing patients with anterior knee pain. During his time at Harvard, he published eleven review articles and book chapters and 13 original research papers. In total, he has more than 49 scientific publications. He is also credited with inventing a device to repair meniscal tears.

As a Sports Medicine specialist, Dr. Gerbino treats injuries to the knees, shoulders, elbows, ankles and hips. Because of his extensive experience with dancers, he also understands and treats many athletic foot problems.

Research, Teaching and Clinical Contributions

Narrative Report

I relocated to Monterey, CA in order to continue the practice of Sports Medicine for a highly motivated population of athletic adults and children. In my previous position at Boston Children’s Hospital, I concentrated on achieving clinical excellence in orthopaedic surgery, teaching orthopaedics and conducting research in pediatric sports medicine. The bulk of my time has been spent involved with my patients and students: in the office, in the operating room and on the wards.

In addition to caring for my patients, I have taught residents, fellows and practicing physicians. I have given grand rounds and lectured locally, nationally and internationally. I have prepared lectures, written chapters and conducted original research. As the Team Physician for Babson College, Miami University of Ohio, and Fitchburg State College, I cared for the athletes and educated the medical staff. I have also provided medical care for the Pittsburgh Marathon, Boston Ballet and Boston Marathon. I now provide care to the U.S. Figure Skating Team, Seaside High School and the Monterey Bay Derby Dames. I help care for the athletes in the Big Sur Marathon.

In my daily practice, a large proportion of my patients came to see me for anterior knee pain. It is common, results in significant disability and has multiple causes. Anterior knee pain is frequently difficult to assign a precise etiology. Most orthopedists treat the symptoms with rest, knowing that most patients get better.

I resolved to discover all the components to this pain so the treatment could be better focused. My patients with anterior knee pain get a precise diagnosis that includes all the components of their particular version of anterior knee pain. The physical therapy they are prescribed is more specific. If they do not respond to non-operative treatment, they get the appropriate operation sooner and more specific to the causes of their pain. My residents and fellows have gained by learning to sort quickly among the causes of anterior knee pain. They learn which problems occur in clusters and why. They learn which treatments work for each source of pain and which do not.

From a research standpoint, anterior knee pain is difficult to study. Relatively few are working in the field and many have been humbled by the difficulty of sorting through the many sources of pain.

My research has identified the sites and intensity of pain in these patients. The study had not been done before and now hypotheses about the causes of pain at these sites can be developed.

Other research includes a study on the relationship between weight-bearing axis and site of osteochondritis dissecans lesions. Another compared standing balance of ballerinas to female soccer players in an effort to understand why the female soccer players get more injuries.

Yet another investigated a new way to save partially torn cruciate ligaments by advancing the ligament and its bone attachment further into the femur. At present, I have 16 published original research studies. Beyond research, I have published 36 review articles and book chapters.

Funding Information

Funding for my research has been from the Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery Foundation.
